The Biewer is known for its
long & flowing coat, to maintain this look the coat requires
daily grooming to keep it from matting. The Biewer has
what is called a "single coat", meaning that they do not have a
undercoat. Their coat is a hyper allergenic coat.
Their hair is incredibly soft and silky. Anyone who has
had the experience of grooming a Biewer will agree that although
it is time consuming it is also very rewarding. It is a
basic part of dog care. Your Biewer should be introduced
to the idea of being groomed at a early age, around two or three
months old. By familiarizing the puppy with this it will
grow to enjoy it and will also be accustomed to the long hours
of grooming as it grows older. It is not necessary for
your Biewer to have long hair, in fact many owners prefer to
have the short "puppy cut" because it is less to maintain and
easier to groom.
Grooming does not just involve
the brushing and combing of your pets coat it also should
include checking your dog's ears, eyes, teeth, paws and their
nails.
To keep their ears erect you
will need to trim them every few weeks. When cleaning the ear
you should never stick anything into the ear. You can use
a ear clean up solution and a small gauze to clean the ear. Just
wipe around the outer ear and very gently around the inner ear.
It is very important to clean
the Biewers teeth regularly with a special dog toothbrush and
paste.
When clipping your dog's nails
just tip the very ends. If you cut too far down the claw
you risk catching the "quick" this is the term for the nerves
and blood vessels that supply the nail.
By giving your Biewer
daily to weekly grooming you are helping to ensure your pet
stays healthy and beautiful!
